“ | I warned you... It does not do to treat vampires lightly. Your weak skills will be of no help to an experienced vampire hunter. | „ | |
~ Charlie Vincent to Carrie Fernandez or Reinhardt Schneider after being turned into a vampire |
Background
Charlie Vincent is a vampire hunter featured in Castlevania (N64) and Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness. As a non-playable character, he makes periodic appearances during the game, assisting the protagonist in their quest. Unlike other notable vampire hunters, Charlie has no known connection to the Belmont Clan.
This dropdown contains the synopsis of Charlie Vincent’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise! |
---|
Charlie Vincent is portrayed as a vampire hunter whose mannerisms suggest a lack of combat experience but reveal a sharp intellect. He relies on an array of anti-vampire tools, such as garlic, laurels, crosses, and holy water, rather than martial skills. This approach is evident when he first meets Reinhardt and Carrie, using his trinkets to fend off evil. Despite his limited combat abilities, Charlie's extensive knowledge of vampires allows him to see through Dracula's deceptive guise as an innocent child, a feat that surpasses the awareness of the protagonists. However, his inability to face stronger enemies relegates him to a supporting role. Charlie's most critical contribution comes during the encounter with the game's final boss. After the player seemingly defeats Dracula, the villain reverts to his guise as Malus, appearing confused and disoriented. As the protagonist approaches, Charlie intervenes, dousing Malus with holy water. This act reveals Dracula's deception, causing the child to ignite in blue flames. Exposed, Dracula transports the player to an alternate dimension for the ultimate battle. Charlie's fate after this confrontation is left unresolved. If the player delays reaching the Castle Keep, Charlie arrives first but fails in his attempt to subdue Dracula. This failure results in him being turned into a vampire, forcing the player to fight and kill him. In this scenario, the protagonists fail to uncover Dracula's ruse, leading to the bad ending where their mission is ultimately unsuccessful. |

Golem with his ultimate can shoot out a mouth blast that vaporizes everything it touches as far as the eye can see getting these results[16]. Powers and Techniques
Resistance to Dracula's Castle (Can enter Dracula's Castle and reach all the way to the top without any adverse effects[37])
The Castle Abilities Include:
Reality Warping (The Castle does not work on standard logic, where changing rooms can have one view a completely different background[38], such as room with a blue sky that is reflecting up and downwards and having the cloud srotate at a fast speed[39]), Transmutation (Beings that come near are subject to the castle's influence, such as a local barnyard owl which was mutated just from flying near it[40]), Possession (The castle possesses objects with its magic, such as a ouija table[41]), Sealing (Dracula's magic captured Aguni, a primitive god of fire[42]. The Castle has doors sealed off without solving puzzles[43]. This can extend to walls being sealed off where explosions will not affect it until the seal is gone[44]), Mind Manipulation (Everything that enters the castle is under the control by the power of Dracula's castle[45], the ghost of Eric Lecarde needed to cast a magic barrier to bind himself so he could be free from the control of the castle[46]. The Castle corrupts the minds of those who enter it, such as making Maxim Kischine feel strange ever since coming to it[47]. It also corrupted the mind of Hugh turning him against Nathan with Nathan noting he's being controlled by Dracula[48]. The castle increases one's dark desires, allowing Dracula to easily control them[49]. The magic of Dracula's power that empowers the owl enemy also spurs it to violence[50]), Madness Manipulation (The Castle warped Gergoth, a once-gentle beast and drove it mad[51]), Size Manipulation (Magically enlarged a toad through the use of demonic baptism[52]), Fear Manipulation (Even while far away, Curtis and Michelle felt malicious intent from the castle where their bodies seemed to squeal "run away"[53]. Michelle even being at the entrance to the castle had her body telling her to not go in and her leg muscles being petrified like stone[54]), Curse Manipulation (The Curse status that spirits inflict[55] comes from them absorbing the magic power around the castle. The Castle cursed a human to turn into a lizard man[56]), Life Manipulation (The castle can bring inanimate statues to life to attack[57]. Can cause the glass murals to come to life and attack[58]), Soul Manipulation (Those that die in the castle become one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle for eternity[59]), Abstract Manipulation & Hell Manipulation (The castle can create a core of evil made from hatred, envy, anger and other dark emotions[60]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[61], where is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[62] where creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[63], along with their vital souls causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[64], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[65], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[66], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[67]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[68]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[69], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[70]. Death was going to use Dracula's magic to rewrite Dracula's defeat to Trevor making it where Dracula defeats Trevor Belmont instead where Dracula would go on living in the rewritten grimoire with each grimoire being its own world and the grimoires influence extends into reality[71]), Law Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[72], which alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[73]), Power Modification (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[74], which the vital souls cause alterations of the Grimoire that can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[75]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[76])
Is a Creature of the Night, which gives:
Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[78], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[79]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[80]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[81]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[82]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[83]. With their souls being completely free from time[84]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[85]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[86]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[87], becoming stronger when it's night time[88]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[89] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[90]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[91]. This has also been shown with slain heads reviving as an angry wraith[92]), Regeneration (Mid-Godly overtime; Even the castle from Castlevania is a Creature of Chaos[93], where they are always rebirth from Chaos with each rebirth, the creatures takes a new form[94], with this state being referred to as a "regeneration cycle"[95]), Invisibility (Creatures of Chaos possess a natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[96]), Time Manipulation (Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[97]), Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[98]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[99], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[100]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[101]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[102]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[103], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[104], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[105], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[106]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[107]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[108], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[109]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[110]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[111]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[112]).
Is a Vampire, which gives:
Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Vampires are considered far larger threats than standard creature of the night monsters[123]), Stealth Mastery (Vampires are able to attack stealthily in search of human blood[124]), Disguise Mastery (Vampires will sometimes disguise themselves[125] as villages in order to get near one[126]), Immortality (Ageless; Vampires defy God's decree that life should be limited, and exist for eternity[127], with Mathias noting he has eternal life[128]. Aeon notes that vampires exist for eternity[129]. Walter is noted to be a vampire that has eternal life[130]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[131]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Vampires will someday come back to life despite them being killed due to being immortal[132]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[133]. With their souls being completely free from time[134]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[135]), Free Will (Vampires do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[136], defying God's decree[137]), Enhanced Senses (Vampires can smell that Reinhardt Schneider and Carrie Fernandez smell different from the usual adventurer[138]), Surface Scaling (Vampires can stand on ceilings[139]), Flight (Vampires can either naturally levitate grow wings to fly[140], turn into a bat[141], or into mist[142]), Immersion (Vampires can infuse magic into paintings to increase their power[143]), Empowerment (Vampires are loved by the night, making them so powerful that vampires like Walter Bernhard never been defeated before Leon Belmont gained the vampire killer[144]. Noted by Leon that the night should help Joachim Armster as well due to him being a vampire, with the only reason it doesn't is due to Walter holding the ebony stone[145]), Resurrection (Even if one somehow manages to kill a vampire, they will someday come back to life despite them being killed due to being immortal[146]), Transformation (Shapeshifting; Vampires can assume the shape of a wolf, a bat or fog[147]. Vampires can disguise themselves as huamns[148]), Teleportation (Vampires possess the ability to teleport freely[149]. Even non-threatening vampires such as Rosa, fade out from view[150]), Power Suppression (Vampires can submerge their own vampiric powers if needed[151]), Life-Force Absorption (Vampires can consume one's lifeforce[152], allowing them to heal themselves through biting into a victim[153]), Vampirification (Vampires can turn others into vampires[154], Walter turned Rinaldo's daughter into a vampire[155]), Invisibility (Vampires possess natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[156]), Time Manipulation (Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[157]), Animal Manipulation (Bats serve under the control of vampires[158], being freely spawnned by any vampire[159]), Cloth Manipulation (A vampire's blood can transform clothes, such as Hector combining a vampire's blood with a prince's clothes to get Dracula's clothes[160]), Electricity Manipulation (Vampires can sometimes have electricity form around them as they transform[161]), Soul Manipulation (The candles in Castlevania are people's souls that were taken by Death or by vampires[162]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Vampire's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[163]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[164]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[165], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[166], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[167], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[168]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[169]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[174]).
Equipment
- Holy Water: A bottle of holy water that Charlie Vinent has access too, he uses it to throw at enemies, causing a holy flames to sprout out of it.
- Cross: A cross Charlie Vincent uses to deduce whether one is human or a creature of the night.
Notable Techniques
- Blood Draining: Vampires can bite and drink the blood of their victims. Blood acts as a source of energy and life for vampires and creatures of the night, an example of this being Red Skeletons who endlessly[195] regenerate[196], from any kind[197] of damage due to it absorbing blood[198].
- Transformation: Vampires are able to turn into bats, wolves, fog, and other sorts of creatures as they please.
- Super Strength: Vampires are incredibly superhumanly strong, even for the average creature of the night, being noted to be stronger than even Werewolves.
- Super Speed: Vampires can move incredibly fast, to where all of them leave behind light projections due to how fast they're moving, while they can control their speeds even to approach speeds such as sound. They are normally beyond even other creatures in the castle such as the White Demon who moves at the speed of light at top speed.
- Holy Water: Charlie throws holy water at the player, causing damage and potentially inflicting Poison status. The flames from the holy water remain on the field for a few seconds, restricting the player's movement.
- Vampiric Bite: Charlie attempts to bite the player at close range, inflicting Vampire status and dealing a small amount of damage.
- Holy Water Spam: When Charlie's health is low, he repeatedly uses holy water, limiting the player's options to avoid damage.
Other
Standard Tactics
- His former vampire-hunting tools are now corrupted, including his use of holy water. This attack deals damage, may cause Poison status, and leaves flames on the ground for a short duration, restricting movement. Multiple uses of holy water can significantly limit the opponent's mobility.
- Charlie will attempt to bite the opponent, causing minor damage and inflicting Vampire status.
- If weakened, Charlie will repeatedly attack with holy water.
Weaknesses
- Creature of the Night Weaknesses: Creatures of the night become weaker when exposed to the morning sun[199]. Garlic significantly weakens creatures of the night[200], and causes demons to die if its placed on the ground[201]. If a vital soul is defeated, the grimoire will revert back to its original content[202].
- Standard Vampire Weaknesses: After a vampire is sufficiently weakened, the sunlight can kill them[203]. Otherwise Vampires can stand out in the sunlight just fine[204]. Though some weaker vampires can have the sun burn them overtime, killing them[205]. Oak Stakes are able to break through the magic of a weakened vampire[206]. Defeating a vampire will stop the effects of someone they have bitten, but only before they've turned[207]. This is shown in Harmony of Dissonance where through Juste killing Dracula's Wraith, the bite marks on Lydie have vanished[208]. Vampires reflections do not appear on mirrors, making them easier to identify[209]. Vampires are noted to be weak during the dawn[210].
Note
- Contrary to popular belief, holy attacks and the whips in Castlevania can affect and harm people that aren't apart of the creatures of the night. Leon's doppelganger can use holy water and holy attacks against him in this fight along with the alchemy whip despite Leon being a pure and noble warrior[211]. Simon's doppelganger can harm him with the vampire killer, despite Simon being a noble hero. Holy Water even works and harms enemies such as the "Holy Armor"[212], a knight who has natural holy powers[213]. Corrupted enemies such as Charlie Vincent, use holy water attacks on Carrie and Reinhardt[214]. Characters like Jonathan Morris wear armor like the Holy Mail, an armor that reduces damage from holy attacks[215].
- While vampires have some weakness to sunlight and can burn overtime in them[216], higher tier vampires[217], can stand out in the sunlight just fine[218] without being weakened. It should also be noted even with Dhamphir's like Alucard, in original lore, he was considered a full vampire yet could stand out in the sunlight perfectly fine.
Trivia
- Charlie Vincent's role and overall personality may have been inspired by Abraham Van Helsing, a character from the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, as both are elderly vampire hunters with knowledge about the forces of evil and how to fight them, but lack enough physical prowess for direct combat, thus being relegated only as mentors for the other protagonists.
- Charlie Vincent's name was likely inspired by Peter Vincent (named after Peter Cushing and Vincent Price), a character from the 1985 vampire film Fright Night, in which a teenager named Charley (read "Charlie") enlists the help of this horror-movie host and former actor to help him hunt down his bloodthirsty vampire neighbor. In the sequel and comics, Peter Vincent reinvents himself as a real vampire hunter.
- Peter Cushing became famous for portraying Professor Abraham Van Helsing in two classic Hammer Productions Dracula films from the 1950s and 1960s.
- Vincent Price was widely renowned for acting in a great number of classic horror and mystery thrillers, becoming the host of several mystery and suspense-themed radio dramas and TV shows.

“Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
However-----
Fate did not allow it.

Whilst listening to the words said by the [grotesque creature], the young hunter kept on reminding himself.

- ↑ Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "Ever since the Middle Ages, every 100 years, this legendary castle would rise together with its master Count Dracula ----- And whenever it happens, it is said that a clan of vampire hunters will seal it.
Several hundred years have passed with battles with the [dark lord] Dracula.
When suddenly, an end to it all has been foretold. 1999----- Thanks to the power of a clan in Japan, Dracula’s castle was sealed inside a [solar eclipse] to disappear forever.
However, in this world, there is no such thing as forever. [They] had understood that Dracula’s regeneration cycle ought to have ended. Indeed, people have prepared for this but will it still exist? The castle is the symbol of the chaos within humans and as long as people exist, it will not be completely sealed. - ↑ Castlevania: Lament of Innocence Bestiary No. 064

- ↑ WN: Last question. Why does Dracula keep putting meat inside the walls of his castle?
KI: You should ask, why do they eat it! I've thought about this stuff.
I've actually thought about the candles. The candles are people's souls that were taken by Death or by the vampires. In Japan there are candles that represent life. So, when you release the souls from the candles by whipping them, they give you a "thank you" present. Thank-you hearts, or thank-you holy water.
The meat, I have no idea. - ↑ Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls Prologue Stage 4
